In an emergency, every second counts! But what do you do if an alarm is triggered in your smart home when you’re not there, you’re stuck in a dead zone or you don’t have your smartphone to hand? It is precisely in such situations that tink Smart Protect – powered by Home Connect Plus can support you. In an emergency situation, the service notifies you via push notification, phone call and SMS, so that you are aware of and can react quickly to the alarm even during a meeting. In the event that you are unable to respond, the service will attempt to notify your specified emergency contacts in the same way. For example, a neighbour you trust could check on things or a family member could take action on site, even if you are not available yourself.
The tink Smart Protect emergency service allows you to send information via various channels if your home is at risk of major damage due to smoke or fire, water leakage or a burglary.
Limit damage, minimise follow-up costs
Does your smart home already have smart devices, such as smoke detectors, presence or motion sensors, door/window contacts or water sensors? Congratulations, then you are already well prepared. But what if an alarm goes off in your home when your smartphone is switched off and you can’t respond? This is where your tink Smart Protect – powered by Home Connect Plus emergency service comes into play, which you can book directly through our service partner tink – at a very good price too.
After booking, you can easily connect your compatible smart home devices to the Home Connect Plus app. Then, if an alarm is triggered, the service will try to contact you by push notification as well as by phone call or SMS. If you yourself cannot be reached, the service will try to contact your predefined emergency contacts as quickly as possible, one after the other, by phone call and SMS. They can then check if everything is OK at your home. This way, in the best case, the extent of a detected damage event, such as burglary, smoke development or fire, as well as water leakage, can be contained, even if you yourself are not at home or cannot be reached.

The heart of the service is the alarm chain, which is triggered as soon as a dangerous situation is detected in your smart home. Of course, if this happens, you will be the first to be notified via push notification, phone call and SMS. However, if you are unable to respond to the alarm to break the alarm chain, you can set up to two emergency contacts, who should also be contacted. They can then check if everything is OK and contain the damage as quickly as possible. How exactly does the alarm chain work in detail? We’ll show you here.

Push notification via the app
You receive a push notification from tink Smart Protect via the Home Connect Plus app. This informs you of the damage that has been detected, including the time.
Your phone call from tink Smart Protect
If you are distracted or have disabled your push notifications, you may not be able to respond to the notification within the allotted time of one minute. In this case, an attempt will be made to call your registered mobile phone number. If the call is unsuccessful, an SMS will be sent and the emergency chain will be continued. Both the phone call and SMS inform you about the type of damage and the time. You also always have the option of interrupting the alarm chain yourself, e.g. if it is a false alarm.
Phone call to your first emergency contact
If you do not cancel the alarm chain by entering a number, the alarm chain will continue and a phone call will be made to your first emergency contact, e.g. your wife. If they do not respond to the call either, an SMS notification will also be sent to them with the most important information and your second emergency contact will be called, if necessary.
Phone call to your second emergency contact
Your second specified emergency contact, e.g. your neighbour, is called. This person has their smartphone to hand and is informed about the triggered alarm. Anyone within the alarm chain can stop the chain.
Alarm confirmed: The damage caused is contained
Once your neighbour has been notified successfully, they can check that everything is OK and, in the best case, contain the extent of the damage. By turning off the main water pipe, they could, for example, stop further water leakage from the washing machine in the basement.

*For various reasons, neither tink nor Home Connect Plus can guarantee that the alarm chain will work in all cases, especially when using third party telecommunication services, such as SMS and phone calls. Telephone notification in an emergency is essential for the use of the service. SMS validation of the mobile phone number is indispensable for notification in an emergency situation. The service only works with mobile phone numbers, as you and your emergency contacts will be contacted by SMS in case of an alarm. As the service is currently only available in Germany, only a German mobile phone number can be used.
You can temporarily pause the alarm detection provided by the tink Smart Protect service in the Home Connect Plus app when you don’t need it. During this time, the automatic alarm chain is stopped. You can find information about the contract period or notice period in your contract documents. You can also get help from the tink support team.
The tink Smart Protect service is currently only available in Germany.
tink Smart Protect in the Home Connect Plus app
- Once the contract has been signed, you will receive an onboarding email from tink explaining all the setup steps. Please also check your spam folder.
- If you are not yet a Home Connect Plus user, download the app from the app store for Android or iOS.
- Set up a Home Connect Plus user account and open the Service tab within the app.
- To use tink Smart Protect, compatible smart home devices must be connected to the Home Connect Plus app. You must first set up these devices via the respective manufacturer app.
You can add or edit your emergency contacts at any time during setup and afterwards in the Home Connect Plus app. Important: Your emergency contacts must also be stored with an active mobile phone number, as they will receive an SMS once they have been designated. The validation SMS also gives you the option of saving the number that will notify you in an emergency in your contacts.
tink Smart Protect alarm chain
A call from tink Smart Protect will only be made when your device connected to the Home Connect Plus app has detected an alarm and you have already received a push notification. If you do not respond to this notification within one minute, the service will try to reach you by phone. If you cannot take this call, your first emergency contact will be called and you will receive an SMS. If your first emergency contact misses the call, they will also receive an SMS and your second stored emergency contact will be called.
Both the call and the SMS inform you about the type of damage (smoke formation, water leakage, burglary) and the time. The call via tink Smart Protect is never anonymised. Callback on this number is not possible.
If you do not answer the call within one minute, you will receive all relevant information (type of damage, time of damage) by SMS. This will reach you even if your smartphone is not connected to the internet. The alarm chain continues and your first emergency contact is called. If this person does not confirm the alarm within one minute, your second emergency contact will be called. After a missed call, each of your stored emergency contacts will also receive an SMS notification with the relevant information.
After a call, the service will leave you an SMS with the relevant information. The alarm can then be confirmed by entering “OK”. If this does not happen, the alarm chain will continue. You can also confirm the alarm in the app at any time.
If neither you nor your stored emergency contacts respond to the call and no one confirms the alarm, the alarm chain will end. No further notifications will be made. Nevertheless, there are various options for subsequently confirming the alarm:
- You can confirm the alarm within 24 hours in the in-app notification.
- You and your emergency contacts can subsequently confirm the alarm by entering “OK” via SMS.
- You can view the current status of the alarm feed in the Home Connect Plus app at any time and can also confirm the alarm here.
For calls within the alarm chain, the tink Smart Protect service always uses the same number. You can save it accordingly and assign the number or contact directly in the event of an incoming call. It is not possible to call back on this number.
The same number is also stored for SMS validation. Your emergency contacts can also save it as a tink Smart Protect contact.
If you use an alarm siren within the service for burglary protection, you must activate the alarm manually when leaving the house. Please also make sure to deactivate the alarm again manually as soon as you are back home to avoid triggering a false alarm. You can leave other devices, such as the water sensor or the smoke detector, permanently in active status without any problems.
Compatible devices for tink Smart Protect
Selected devices from our partners Homematic IP and Somfy are compatible for use with tink Smart Protect – powered by Home Connect Plus. Please check this list in advance, to see whether your devices meet the requirements for using tink Smart Protect. If you have any further questions about the service, please contact tink support.
- First, you have to set up your new devices via the respective manufacturer’s app.
- You can then connect these devices as usual via the Home Connect Plus app.
- Once successfully integrated, you can add these devices to tink Smart Protect via the Service menu in the Home Connect Plus app.
With the tink Smart Protect service, you can integrate all your service-compatible smart home devices in one service booking. This means that you can integrate your smoke detector as well as your door and window contact into the service.
We are already working flat out to make more equipment and manufacturers available for service. We are already in talks with existing partner companies to have the relevant devices approved for the service.
In the device configuration of your motion detector in the Homematic IP app, there is a “Minimum transmission interval for motion detection” menu option. The default setting is four minutes. To set a shorter time interval between the alarms, reduce the time interval here to increase the transmission interval.
Your emergency service, your devices, your worry-free smart home
To use the service, you need compatible Smart Home devices that you have to connect to the Home Connect Plus app. You must set up these devices beforehand via the respective manufacturer’s app. In order to use the emergency service tink Smart Protect – powered by Home Connect Plus, you must already have a contract with tink for its use.
